Signwriting Workshop 

This is a two day introduction to the craft of traditional signwriting, run by Meg Gregory. We will cover the best materials and equipment to use, practice lettering and shading techniques, discuss design and colour theory and demonstrate how to lay out a signwritten panel. This course uses boat decoration and signwriting as the base of learning, but skills learnt would be applicable to a wide range of uses. Other aspects of signwriting ( lining, script lettering etc) will also be covered. Small classes ensures each student will have the opportunity to discuss and get advice on their particular area of interest.

Numbers limited to 6, cost £160 (inc.£30 deposit on booking to reserve a place) to include lunch and refreshments on both days.

Roses and Castles Painting Workshop

This is a practial two day course on traditional narrowboat decoration with Meg Gregory. We will cover the origins and history of the decoration and you will learn techniques to paint roses, daisies, leaves, castles and landscapes. These skills will then be used to and paint an item to take home, after practise and tuition tailored to each individual.

Numbers limited to 6, cost £160 to include lunch and refreshments on both days.

Traditional Working Boat Decoration

Fed up of 'Roses and Castles'??? There's more to boat decoration than that alone! In this practical two day course we will cover Scumbling / Graining, Lining, Motifs, Diamonds, Compass Roses, BCN Symbols and traditional bow and stern colours and decoration. Each student will produce a panel to take home, along with course notes for future reference.

Follow On Courses

People who have attended any of the above courses will later be invited to a 'Follow On' course in their chosen field, at a later date. This gives the opportunity to practice, develop skills and recieve valuable feedback on progress should they wish to progress further. More techniques to learn, queries answered and a get together with other like minded souls!

How to Paint Your Boat

Boat looking tired and tatty and in need of some serious TLC? Do your homework first and learn how to paint it properly! Preparation, materials and techniques are all covered in this weekend course and we guarantee you will leave knowing how to make a better job of anything (not just boats) you paint in the future. This course takes the form of practical demonstrations and tuition by Phil Speight (professional boat painter of many years!) with comprehensive course notes to take away. Courses are held throughout the year.
